Meet our animals

Every year during the Spring, our animals give birth and the farm flourishes as the new- borns find their feet and start to mature. Our sheep/goats usually give birth to twins which means that from Spring time we have over 100 of these lovely animals on the farm - not including lambs from the previous year. You may not see them all on our main visitor side of the farm as we have to periodically move our flocks to new fields so that they have lovely fresh grass to eat

Our Rare Breed sheep and goats:

We currently have six rare breeds of sheep at Doonies. Whitefaced Woodland; Kerryhill; Oxford Down; Greyface Dartmoor; Portland; Norfolk Horn. We keep 1 rare breed of goat, the Golden Guernsey

Only some of our sheep have names, mainly the pet lambs. Every year we do get one or two pet lambs which happens if their mothers do not have enough milk, the lambs are born weak or if their mothers reject them. This can happen sometimes if it is a ewe's first pregnancy but often is not repeated the second time round

How many of these sheep/goats are left in Britain? How many do you have at Doonies?

Whitefaced Woodland: 500 - 900 left in Britain and we have a small flock of 7

Kerryhill: 1500 - 3000 left in Britain and we have a flock of 20

Oxford Down: 1500 - 3000 left in Britain and we have a flock of 24

Greyface Dartmoor: 1500 - 3000 left in Britain and we have a flock of 6

Our Rare Breeds horses and ponies:

We have 1 breed of rare pony, the Eriskay and 1 breed of rare horses, the Clydesdale. In total, we have 4 Eriskay ponies and 2 Clydesdale horses

How many are left in Britain? What are their names?

Eriskay pony: Less than 300 left in Britain. Our Eriskay ponies are called Misty, Rhona, Ptarmigan and Niall

Clydesdale horse: 500 - 900 left in Britain. Our Clydesdale horses are called April and Hazel and are mum and daughter

Our herd of English Longhorn cattle:

We have almost 80 head of cattle here at Doonies, that are graze our largest fields close by to the farm. You can see them if you choose to take a walk along the glorious coastal path which runs parallel to Doonies. Longhorn cattle used to be a rare breed but thankfully, they are now off the rare and endangered list and are thriving

All of our cows and heifers have names but it would be a very big list indeed if we were to include every single one! However, our stock bulls are called Winestone and Monty. Winestone came all the way from Lincolnshire and Monty was born right here at Doonies
